CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. –
Kennedy Proctor drove in seven runs, including a career-high five in one game, as the University of Utah softball team notched wins over CSUN, 8-1, and Rutgers, 3-2, on Friday evening on day two of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.
These two triumphs bump Utah's 2026 record to 10-3.
"I'm happy this team found a way to pull out two wins today," said coach
Amy Hogue. "Our pitching staff continues to put us in position to win pretty much every game. Shelbee threw a phenomenal game and then Raci had her best outing I've seen her have as a Ute.
"Crank's home run helped us to get the bats started in game one and I can't say enough about how Proctor is hitting the ball right now. She's been the most consistent hitter with runners in scoring position and she's been hitting every type of pitch."
Utah vs. CSUN
The first dent in home plate was made by the Matadors in the top of the first thanks to a pair of hit batters, a single and a passed ball, but the Utes wasted no time stealing the momentum in the bottom half.
Hailee White led off with a double,
Mia Gomez was hit by a pitch and
Payton Crank clubbed a three-run homer to left that gave Utah a lead they'd never relinquish. Two more runs came in the second when Proctor launched a two-run tater to left and the California native wasn't done. In the sixth, she sent a three-run bomb over the wall in center that made it 8-1 and closed out the scoring.
Proctor's five RBIs were a new career-high and it marked her second career multi-homer performance, the first coming on March 28, 2025.
These fireworks provided plenty of cushion for starting pitcher
Shelbee Jones, but she wouldn't need it all. After CSUN's unearned tally in the first, she didn't let a single runner reach third base and racked up a career-best 11 strikeouts. That number included a sixth inning in which she struck out the side and Jones would end the night with her fourth start of the season in which she went at least four innings without giving up an earned run.
Utah vs. Rutgers
A pitcher's duel ensued between the Utes and Scarlets Knights and
Raci Miranda and
Hailey Maestretti were up to the task for Utah.
Miranda allowed an unearned run in the first and solo homer in the fifth, but she also put together a string of eight straight retired at one point. Over 5 1/3 innings, she permitted only two hits and struck out four.
Through four innings, the Utes were unable to erase their deficit, but they found their footing in the bottom of the fifth, thanks in part to walks to
Danika Wilson and
Jolie Mayfield. With two outs, Proctor delivered in the clutch again, dropping a two-run triple into right that evened the score and
Mia Gomez followed with an RBI single to nudge Utah into a 3-2 lead.
Maestretti was then tasked with locking down the win and she came through. She used a strikeout and a groundout to strand two runners in scoring position in the sixth, then stranded two more in the seventh, collecting her first save of the season.
