SALT LAKE CITY – For the first time since 2021, the University of Utah softball team has started a season with eight wins in 10 tries and they'll be trying to carry those vibes into one of their busiest weeks of the season, which will involve playing six games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, which will be held at the Big League Dreams Sports Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.

Amy Hogue Milestone Watch
Utah softball head coach
Amy Hogue is closing in on two historic milestones. She's just four victories away from becoming the first Utah softball head coach to ever achieve 500 wins and with seven more triumphs, she'll have 700 in her overall career as a head coach. Hogue can already lay claim to the title of the winningest coach in Utah softball history, a milestone she reached in 2022 and one year later, she earned her 400th victory at the helm of the program, as well as her 600th overall.
Last Time Out
For a second straight road trip, the Utes left California after a 4-1 week and Utah's pitching and hitting complimented each other well again.
In the circle,
Hailey Maestretti,
Shelbee Jones,
Raci Miranda and
Anna Reimers all earned victories and those four pitchers combined to pitch to a 1.62 ERA. Maestretti crafted the week's best performance, firing a two-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over Santa Clara. Miranda and Reimers picked up wins with excellent work out of the bullpen while Jones permitted just three earned runs and struck out 13 in 12 2/3 innings.
At the plate,
Payton Crank,
Kennedy Proctor and
Mia Gomez led the way and Gomez's .563/.611/.875 slash line helped her take home the Big 12 Freshman of the Week award. She contributed to Utah's defeat of Santa Clara with her first collegiate home run and recorded three multi-hit games. Proctor hit .412 with four doubles, three of which came in one game to tie a program record. Crank batted .400 for the week and also added to Utah's total of 13 two-baggers at the Silicon Valley Classic.
Scouting the Opposition
The Utes will be one of the busiest teams at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, playing in six games and helping kick-off the tournament by playing Bethune Cookman on Thursday. It will be the first time since 2019 Utah will play on all four days of the tournament. The Wildcats will arrive in Cathedral City with a 2-9 record, but are also coming off a season in which they went 14-10 in the SWAC. They also have a player in Emma Bradley-Tse who is hitting .400.
The best player on the CSUN roster so far in 2026 has been outfielder Raegan Jackson, who owns a .450 batting average, while for the Scarlet Knights, Siera Hoekstra has a .412 clip and Kelsey Hoekstra is hitting .400. While the Utes are set for rematches with LMU and UC Riverside, both of whom they played during the season's first weekend, it will be their first time encountering California Baptist in 2026. The Lancers' offense has been spectacular through 11 games, putting together a .356 batting average that includes four players with averages of .400 or better.

Double Dare
Kennedy Proctor added her name to the school record book on Feb. 14, when she clocked three doubles at the expense of Illinois State. She was the sixth player in Utah history to log a performance like that and the first since Kelly Martinez in 2018.
Hailey Hurls a Gem
Hailey Maestretti put forth perhaps the best performance of her collegiate career against Santa Clara on Feb. 13. She allowed only two hits, didn't walk a batter, struck out six and faced just three batters over the minimum. The sophomore southpaw retired the first six batters she faced, then used a pair of strikeouts to work around a lead-off single in the first. Maestretti induced a double play ball to help her get out of the fourth, worked a perfect fifth, then stranded runners in the final two stanzas and fired back-to-back punchouts in the seventh to complete her masterpiece.
Triple Threat
In Utah's first game of 2026,
Hailee White stenciled her name into the program record book. With two triples against UC Riverside, White became the 12th player in school history to record two three-baggers in one game and the first since Abby Dayton in 2024.
Go-Ahead Gopher Balls
The Utes homered four times during the season's first weekend. All four shots gave the team the lead.
Kayla Lyon's two homers started the scoring against UC Riverside and UCSB, as did
Kennedy Proctor's first-inning tater vs. LMU.
Shelbee Shuts 'em Down
On Sept. 7,
Shelbee Jones was at her best in the circle against UCSB. She posted her first complete game shutout as a Ute, permitting only four hits in a 4-0 Utah win.
