CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The University of Utah softball team was defeated by the LMU Lions, 7-5, and the Cal Baptist Lancers, 5-4, on Saturday evening on day three of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.
Utah drops to 10-5 in 2026.
Utah vs. LMU
The Lions were very quick to jump in front, as an infield hit and a two-run homer in the first inning provided them with the game's first lead. In the third, a lead-off single and an error opened the door for a five-run inning capped by a three-run Cristina Jones home run. LMU's offense was held in check after that, thanks in part to three innings of one hit relief courtesy of
Anna Reimers.
The Utes had a chance to respond, putting two on with one out in the third and loading the bases with nobody out in the fourth, but they could only manage one run from those two opportunities.
One more comeback attempt was mounted by Utah in the seventh, sparked by a two-run
Mia Gomez home run. Two walks later in the frame brought
Cian Noli to the plate and she snuck a two-run single inside of first base to bring up the tying run, but LMU stopped the rally there.
Utah vs. Cal Baptist
Utah's offense came to life early against the Lancers. The Utes put their first two runners on in the second and back-to-back RBI knocks off the bats Noli and
Shonty Passi built a 2- 0 edge.
Unfortunately for Utah, the Lancers found a way to move ahead in their half of the second thanks to a run-scoring wild pitch and a two-run single. In the fourth, a pair of walks and stolen bases and another error plated two more and boosted CBU's advantage to 5-2.
In the circle, Utah's
Shelbee Jones and
Raci Miranda did combine to limit the opposition to one hit over six innings while striking out seven.
That lead was still intact in the sixth, when a hit batter and a walk brought the tying run up for the Utes. With one out,
Danika Wilson sliced a two-run double into the gap in left-center, pulling her side to within a run, but the hit that would've brought in the tying run didn't materialize. Utah was retired in order in the seventh to end the evening.
