SALT LAKE CITY –
Danika Wilson's seventh-inning single pushed across the winning run for the University of Utah softball team, which came from behind to defeat the BYU Cougars, 3-2, on Thursday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
The Utes improved to 31-17-1 overall and 6-12-1 in the Big 12.
This game shaped up as a pitcher's duel from the start. Utah starter
Shelbee Jones and BYU's Hailey Shuler each hung up zeroes in the first two frames, stranding runners along the way in each inning.
In the third, BYU used two singles and a walk to load the bases with nobody out and Maddie Udall-Woolley got the visitors on the board with a two-run single to left. Jones, however, stopped the scoring there, inducing a double play ball and a groundout to quell the uprising and keep the Utes within two.
Utah's comeback started in the fifth, when
Reese Lee dropped a double into left and scored on a
Mia Gomez single. In the sixth, two hits and a walk packed the sacks and
Anna Reimers came across with the tying run on an error. Meanwhile, Jones, who retired eight straight at one point, kept BYU's lineup in check.
The bottom of the seventh started with an error that sent
Kennedy Proctor all the way to third. The next hitter was Wilson and her safety through the middle plated the run that secured the series opener for Utah.
