SALT LAKE CITY –
Hailey Maestretti only allowed five hits while throwing her 13th complete game of the year and
Kennedy Proctor and
Danika Wilson both blasted homers to help the University of Utah softball team top the No. 19/20 Arizona Wildcats, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon in Big 12 action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
This triumph boosts Utah's overall record to 34-19-1 and 9-13-1 in conference. With this victory, the Utes will enter Sunday's regular-season finale needing a win or an Iowa State loss to clinch a spot in the Big 12 Tournament.
"We had all three components of the game today," said coach
Amy Hogue, "great pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting. When you can achieve at least two of these, you have a strong chance of winning. I'm proud of how our team performed today."
Over seven innings, Maestretti held one of the best lineups in the nation to five hits and one walk. She started the day by retiring the first six batters she faced and through six stanzas, held the visitors without an extra base hit. She also didn't allow a base runner to get into scoring position until the seventh inning.
Utah had no such trouble denting home plate. In the opening frame,
Shonty Passi legged out her first triple of the season and, one batter later, Wilson singled in Passi with the day's first run.
The Utes extended their lead in the third. Proctor hit a solo home run to left center and
Payton Crank and
Kayla Lyon followed with singles through the right side.
Cian Noli then knocked one through the middle, scoring Crank to make the score 3-0. In the sixth, Wilson clobbered an 0-2 pitch to right for a two-run homer and a 5-0 edge.
A solo homer in the bottom of the seventh put Arizona on the board, but Maestretti put a stop to their scoring after that, retiring three of the next four hitters to secure the win. This goes down as Maestretti's third win over a ranked team in 2026, as she also defeated No. 21/22 Arizona State on March 7 and No. 1 Texas Tech on April 11.
