SALT LAKE CITY –
Mia Gomez recorded two hits and reached base three times, but the University of Utah softball team suffered a 6-1 defeat to the No. 19/20 Arizona Wildcats on Friday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah is now 33-19-1 overall in 2026 and 8-13-1 in conference. With Iowa State's loss to UCF on Friday, the Utes remain in possession of the eighth and final spot in the 2026 Big 12 Tournament, a half-game ahead of the Cyclones.
The Wildcats were able to get on the board quickly, using a walk, two singles and sacrifice fly to plate a pair in the first. They added two in the third on two more hits, an error, a wild pitch and another sacrifice fly, followed by a triple and an error in the fourth that made the score 5-0. Arizona tacked on an unearned run in the fifth.
Raci Miranda took over in the circle for Utah in the sixth and finished the day with two scoreless frames. She held the visitors without a hit and didn't walk a batter over those two innings.
At the plate, Utah had traffic on the bases all day, with the lead-off hitter reaching five times in seven tries. The Utes put runners in scoring position in the first and fourth innings, but couldn't find the hit they needed to break through.
In the seventh, the home team used a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases and a base on balls to
Danika Wilson with two outs got the Utes on the board.
Shonty Passi then sent a deep fly to center in a bid for an extra base hit, but Regan Shockey ran it down to end the game.
Gomez had a good day in the batter's box for Utah, slapping two hits, including a double, and reaching on a hit by pitch.
Kennedy Proctor used a hit and walk to reach twice, Passi collected her ninth double of the year and
Cian Noli drew a pair of free passes.
