SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah softball team was defeated 5-1 by the BYU Cougars on Saturday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
The Utes are now 32-18-1 overall and 8-12-1 in the Big 12.
The game opened with two scoreless innings before, in the third, Ilove'a Brittingham lined a two RBI double to center to put BYU on the board first. The Cougars extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth with three doubles and a single that plated three more runs.
Utah's first offensive chance came in the third, thanks to a
Reese Lee bunt single and a walk to
Shonty Passi, but a strikeout ended that threat. In the sixth, the Utes put two on again with singles from
Cian Noli and
Payton Crank, only for a groundout to end that frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Utes mounted one more comeback effort.
Danika Wilson lined tripled into left and scored one batter later on a
Reese Lee sacrifice fly. A hit batter and a walk then put two Utes on with two outs, but a fielder's choice groundout brought the evening to an end.
Crank finished the day with two hits for the Utes and Passi reached twice on walks. Wilson also recorded a triple and a base on balls, with Noli and Lee adding knocks of their own.
