SALT LAKE CITY –
Hailey Maestretti tossed her fifth complete-game shutout of 2026 for the University of Utah softball team in a 9-0 blanking of the BYU Cougars on Friday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
The Utes improved to 32-17-1 overall and 8-11-1 in the Big 12.
In the first, Utah loaded the bases on two walks and a single and
Cian Noli drew the Utes' third free pass of the inning to force in the game's initial run. Two batters later, Haliee White also walked, scoring
Mia Gomez and giving the Utes a 2-0 lead.
That was already more than enough run support for Maestretti, who kept the opposition in check all day. Across five innings, she allowed only three singles, didn't walk a batter and struck out four. At one point, she retired eight-in-a-row and she didn't allow the Cougars to put a runner scoring position all day. Maestretti's five shutouts in one season are the most in a single year by a Utah pitcher since Brianna Gourdin also threw five in 2004.
The Utah offense, meanwhile, kept tacking on.
Danika Wilson put one on the board with an RBI double to right-center in the third and the rally that secured the run-rule win in came in the fourth. With runners on second and third,
Cian Noli punched a run-scoring safety into left. After a hit batter loaded the bases, Wilson poked a two-run knock into right and that was followed by an RBI infield hit courtesy of
Kayla Lyon.
Sianni Sakai finished off the rally with a two-run triple, giving the Utes a 9-0 advantage. Maestretti took care of the rest as Utah secured a series victory.
