CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Utah Softball started the Mary Nutter Classic with a split as it shut down Syracuse, 6-0, before falling to Arkansas, 4-2.
Utah 6, Syracuse 0
Katie Donovan and
Hailey Hilburn combined to silence the Orange offense, limiting it to only two hits in the opener.
Donovan picked up the 450
th strikeout of her career, mowing down seven batters in five innings of work. Hilburn set down six of the final seven batters as Utah picked up the win.
Though Syracuse threatened in the second, Utah was the first to score.
Chandler Walter started the third inning with a single and a pitch hit
Ryley Ball. After
BreOnna Castaneda advanced both runners with a ground out,
Alyssa Barrera brought them home with a single up the middle.
With Donovan cruising, Utah added to its advantage in the fifth. Ball singled and Castaneda crushed a ball to left, her second homer of the season. With one out,
Heather Bowen reached on an error and alertly took second. It turned out to be beneficial as
Julia Noskin's slap hit scored the senior for a 5-0 lead.
The final run came across in the sixth when Walter and Ball singled consecutively. Castaneda lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored pinch runner
Aubrey Peterson.
Arkansas 4, Utah 2
The Razorbacks got things going when Loren Krzysko belted a solo homer to start the game. She singled her second time up to create a jam for Utah pitcher
Katie Donovan but the senior hurler got a fly ball to center and a ground ball to short to keep it a one-run game.
In the bottom half,
Julia Noskin delivered a one-out single. After
BreOnna Castaneda bunted, an error on an
Alyssa Barrera grounder kept the inning alive. It would benefit the Utes as
Heather Bowen followed with a ground ball that just eluded the Arkansas third baseman for a double down the line.
Kelly Martinez followed with a single deep in the hole at short to put Utah in front, 2-1
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as Arkansas took advantage of a passed ball with two outs and a runner on third to tie the game.
The game remained even until the seventh. Arkansas had a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs when Krzysko squeaked a ball past
Miranda Viramontes, who was on in relief, and a diving try by
Chandler Walter kept the ball in the infield. Despite the effort, the Razorbacks had both runners score for the deciding runs.
Utah is back in action tomorrow morning with a doubleheader starting at 9:30 a.m. PT. The Utes open with Cal Poly before a NCAA Regional rematch with Fordham.
