Utah started right away as
Alyssa Barrera singled up the middle and
Kelly Martinez followed with a knock to left. After
Heather Bowen worked a free pass on a full count,
Ally Dickman singled through the right side for a 1-0 lead.
The Utes would add two more when
Chandler Walter earned a free pass with the bases juiced and UT committed a fielding error on an
Abby Robertson grounder.
In the bottom half,
Katie Donovan worked around a pair of walks in the first, getting a fly ball to left and grounder to second
The Vols would load the bases in third with no one out before
Amy Hogue went to
Miranda Viramontes out of the pen. The senior induced a grounder to
BreOnna Castaneda on the first pitch and the second baseman alertly threw home for a force. After a strikeout, a ground ball to Bowen capped the escape act for the Utes.
Barrera doubled to start the fifth, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Bowen and
Hailey Hilburn walked around a Dickman single and Utah had the bases loaded. Walter hit one to the right side that brought in another run for a 5-0 lead.
UT finally got on the board in the fifth when Chelsea Seggern smashed a RBI triple off the wall in dead center. She would score on a sacrifice fly by Scarlet McSwain to give the opposition some life.
Abby Lockman then homered to start the sixth and brought the Vols a little closer at 5-3
In the seventh, Gregg doubled and Seggren singled through the right side with one out. After a walk loaded the bases, Lockman delivered again, smashing a bases-clearing double to the wall in left center.
The final play was not without controversy as the relay throw from Walter to Martinez beat the UT runner who was then tagged by the Utah catcher. However, the umpire ruled obstruction at the plate, calling the Vol runner safe and resulting in a 6-5 walk-off loss for Utah.
