Utah opens play in Tempe, Ariz. at the Kajikawa Classic. The Utes begin with a doubleheader Friday (Feb. 9) vs. New Mexico and No. 25 Georgia starting at 9:15 a.m. Contests against Nebraska, No. 11 Tennessee and Saint Mary's follow over the next two days.
UTAH NOTES
- Utah enters the season ranked No. 15Â by NFCA/ USA Today and No. 16Â by ESPN/USA Softball. The Utes finished 2017 with its highest national ranking ever (#14).Â
- Alyssa Barrera was named to the USA Softball Player of the Year "Watch List", one of nine sophomores on the 50-person list
- Utah finished 37-16, its best record since 1997, and had its best mark in Pac-12 play (13-9) since joining the conference in 2012.
- The Utes reached the postseason for a 21st time and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in a third straight year, a program first.
- Utah also advanced to a second-straight NCAA Super Regional and hosted a NCAA Regional for the first time
-Â Utah ranked 18th nationally in scoring at 5.9 runs per contest and team batting average (.318)
- Defensively, Utah led the league and ranked second nationally with 32 double plays turned
- The Utes were one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked among the top 25 nationally in the RPI, sitting at No. 19Â
- The five players selected to the first and second Pac-12 all-conference teams in 2017 were the most for Utah since it joined the Pac-12.Â
