TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 15 Utah Softball concluded play at the Kajikawa Invitational this afternoon with a 5-2 win over Saint Mary's College.
Hailey Hilburn earned her second win of the weekend, allowing just one run on two hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Katie Donovan struck out three batters and worked through a jam in the sixth to notch her first save of the season.
SMC grabbed a 1-0 lead thanks to an error, two wild pitches and a well-executed double steal. However, it was short-lived as
Heather Bowen cracked a two-run homer in the Utah first to put her side in front to stay.
It was the second homer of the weekend for Bowen, who batted .500 (7-for14) for the tournament and led the team with six runs scored.
She singled again in the second and after a walk to
Kelly Martinez, Utah had something going with no outs. However, it could not add to its lead. Another chance came in the fifth due to a pair of walks and SMC error. This time, Martinez skied a ball to the deepest part of the park before the Gael center fielder corralled it for an out.
With some momentum, Saint Mary's put two one with one out against Hilburn in the sixth. That is when Donovan was called upon and she delivered, getting a fly ball to center and ringing up the final batter to preserve the lead.
Utah got its insurance in the seventh.
Ally Dickman singled, SMC misplayed a Hilburn sacrifice bunt and
Chandler Walter laid down an effective squeeze to load the bases.
Abby Robertson smashed a single to center for one run and
BreOnna Castaneda capped her weekend with a two-run single to center, making the score 5-1.
Castaneda, batting in the leadoff spot, tied Bowen for the team lead with seven hits and five runs driven in this weekend. All while playing a stellar second base for the Utes.
Utah heads to the Mary Nutter Classic next weekend, held in Cathedral City, Calif. Play begins Saturday at 3 p.m. PT with a doubleheader against Syracuse and Arkansas.
