Utes Earn 2-0 Road Win Over Utah Valley
8/17/2026 11:20 PM | Soccer
Clem, Callaway Score, Solomon logs second straight clean sheet
This triumph boosts Utah's 2026 record to 1-0-1.
"I'm really happy for this group to get their first win of the season," said coach Hideki Nakada. "UVU is a very talented team and their environment is an incredibly difficult place to play. I'm really proud of this group for finding a way to get the job done.
"I don't think we particularly performed at our best tonight and, honestly, I think that's one of the best things about tonight. We found a way to win despite not playing our best and there is still so much room for this group to grow and improve. We'll enjoy this victory tonight, and then we'll turn our attention to Southern Utah and start preparing tomorrow."
The Utes spent much of the early going on the defensive as UVU put two shots on goal and earned two corner kicks in the first 20 minutes, but Solomon stopped both efforts and the Utes fended off each corner. UVU also had a 32nd minute goal waved off when the scorer was ruled offside.Utah turned the momentum around in the later part of the period, starting with a Nevaeh Peregrina shot in the 32nd minute. In the 43rd minute, a perfect through ball from Callaway put Julia Oka in on goal and Oka drew a foul on UVU's Madeleine Boucher that resulted in the home team keeper being sent off. The ensuing chance was put on goal Reese Kennel, but her shot was deflected just over the bar to keep the match scoreless into halftime.
The second half started as a back-and-forth affair, with both sides earning chances, including a UVU shot that was stopped by Solomon in the 61st minute, but moments later, Utah broke through. From near midfield, Reese Kennel sent a ball to the top of the box that found Shannon Davidson. Davidson's pass sent Oka into the box and Oka's cross arrived on the foot of Clem, who booted it in for the tiebreaking tally.

Even with the lead, the Utes stayed aggressive in pursuit of a second goal and that strategy paid off in the 82nd minute. When Peregrina sent a ball towards the box, UVU keeper Emily Bergero tried to corral it, but Maddie Stoddard poked it free to Callaway, who fired a perfect strike into the open net, making the score 2-0.

After Utah took the lead, the visitors permitted only three total shots, only one of which was on-target. That effort was stopped by Solomon for her fourth and final save of the night.
That final stop helped secure a second straight shutout for Solomon, something a Utah goalkeeper hadn't accomplished to start a season since 2015. Solomon joins a group that includes Lindsey Luke , who accomplished the feat twice, and Ashley Mason, who blanked San Francisco and Boist State to start the 2005 campaign. Overall, it's the fifth time the Utes have started the year by blanking their first two opponents.
