Utah picks up a point in 0-0 deadlock
SALT LAKE CITY – Anna Solomon earned her fifth clean sheet of the season as the University of Utah women's soccer team finished level with the Arizona Wildcats, 0-0, on Friday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
Â
Utah now has five points in conference play to go with a 1-4-2 league record and an overall mark of 4-7-4. Arizona is 2-1-4 in the Big 12 and 5-5-5 overall.
Â
"I'm really proud of the way we played tonight," said coach Hideki Nakada. "I thought we did more than enough to win the game, but unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be. While it's disappointing not to come away with three points, there were a lot of positives in our performance. We created opportunities, competed well, and showed a lot of good things. Now, we need to build on that performance, keep pushing forward, and find a way to turn these performances into results we know we can achieve."
Â
The first 20 minutes were spent with both sides probing for a weakness, but just one shot was generated and that try was easily saved by Solomon. Utah's first attempt came in the 18th minute from Shannon Davidson, but it sailed over the bar. The Utes also applied pressure that resulted in four corner kicks between the 21st and 27th minutes, but the Wildcats kept each of the those chances out of the net.
Â
Utah's best first-half opportunity came in the 32nd minute, when Jastel David slid a pass through Arizona's back line and found Julia Oka sprinting towards the goal, but Oka's try from the right side of the box went wide.
Â
Both sides put together serious threats in the first 10 minutes of the second half, with a Utah turnover in the 51st minute leading to an open shot for Lainey Swanson from the left side of the 18, but her shot was high. The Utes came close to breaking the deadlock in the 54th minute, when a Nevaeh Peregrina ball into the box on a free kick was headed on target by Kori Pickelle, but another save kept the home side off the board again. Just over a minute later, a bouncing ball into Utah's defensive zone found Arizona's Jessica Bedolla, who had an open net for a moment, only for a sliding Solomon to recover and block the shot.
Â
For the match's final half-hour, both back lines remained stout and for most of that stretch, Sophie Bellini's 65th minute effort was the only shot on goal. With 25 seconds remaining, however, the Utes earned a penalty kick thanks to Trinity Dorsey foul. Unfortunately for Nakada's crew, Arizona's Laurynn Ziller stopped the shot, and the clock ran out soon after to clinch the draw.
Â
The night ended with the home side owning a 12-5 edge in shots and Utah also put four tries on goal compared to two for Arizona. Peregrina's three shots and two on-target efforts led all players, while Oka and Pickelle each took two shots. The advantage in possession also belonged to the home team by a 55-45 margin.
