Utah, Oklahoma State tie 2-2
STILLWATER, Okla. – Goals came from Shannon Davidson and Katie Callaway for the University of Utah women's soccer team in a 2-2 draw with the Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Thursday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Neal Patterson Stadium in Stillwater, Okla.
Â
Utah's 2026 ledger stands at 4-7-5 and 1-4-3 in conference. Oklahoma State has a record of 5-7-4 overall and 1-5-2 in the Big 12.
"Tonight was another example of how our season has gone," said coach Hideki Nakada. "Once again, we were inches away from earning three points and it's disappointing to let that opportunity slip away. We've been in these situations too many times this season, and at some point, we have to find a way to close out games."
 Â
The pace of play in the early going was controlled by Utah, with the Utes getting off three shots in the first five minutes. Two of those efforts were on-target, starting with an indirect free kick from the top of the six-yard box by Davidson that was blocked by an OSU defender in the fourth minute. Moments later, a ball into the box by Davidson found Julia Oka, but Oka's try was denied as well.
Â
After 20 minutes, the visitors owned a 6-0 edge in shots and that persistence paid off in the 21st minute. A shot by Kennedy Fletcher from the top of the box was deflected and landed at the feet of Davidson inside the box. The sophomore's first try was blocked, but she blasted a second one past the keeper to give Utah the lead. For Davidson, she added to her team lead in goals, now with five, and points, which would be at 14 by the end of the night.
Â
Defensively, the Utes held their hosts without a shot for nearly 40 minutes and the only first-half stop Anna Solomon needed to make came in the 39th minute.
Â
The Utes nearly doubled their lead early in the final period when a Sophie Bellini cross led to a Davidson lay-off to Oka, who was in on goal, but Oka's shot was saved. OSU then took advantage of a scoring opportunity to draw level in the 56th minute.
Â
That deadlock was broken with less than nine minutes to play when the Utes took advantage of a chance on a counter. A Davidson through ball was chased down by Jastel David on the left side of the box, David lofted a cross towards the mouth of the goal and Callaway was on the spot to head it in. For Callaway, it represented her career-high fourth score of the year, while David picked up her first collegiate point.
Â
Unfortunately for Utah, that lead slipped away as well when OSU equalized again in the 88th minute. Despite multiple efforts to move ahead for a third time, including a long-range effort from David that was deflected over the crossbar, the Utes were forced to settle for a draw.
"I thought we did many good things offensively," said Nakada, "but we lacked the killer instinct and quality in the final third to put the game away. Defensively, we also needed to be sharper in critical moments. We knew Oklahoma State is a dangerous counterattacking team, and we emphasized the importance of taking care of the ball in key areas. Unfortunately, a turnover in a critical area cost us, and we have to learn from those moments.
Â
"We'll take the positives from tonight, and we'll regroup quickly to turn our attention to Texas Tech, one of the best teams in the country, and prepare ourselves for that challenge."
Â
Advantages in total shots and shots on goal both belonged to the away side, with Utah's 15 total tries being led by Davidson's five. Kennedy Fletcher set a new career-high with four shots, while Oka contributed two.
