Utes defeated 1-0, to visit No. 16 West Virginia on Sunday
CINCINNATI -Â The University of Utah women's soccer team was defeated by a score of 1-0 by the Cincinnati Bearcats on Thursday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati.
Â
Utah is now 4-6-3 in 2025 and 1-3-1 in conference.
Â
Both sides spent the next 10 minutes trading opportunities, including a try by Shannon Davidson from seven yards out that was blocked at the 15:38 mark. The Bearcats appeared to be the first team to get on the scoresheet in the 29th minute, but a challenge by Nakada led to the score being waved off due to a handball. That was the closest either side came to scoring in the first half and the teams entered the break scoreless.
Â
The first scoring chance of the second period came in the 53rd minute, when Campbell was again on the end of a cross at the top of the six-yard box, but her shot soared over the bar. Campbell's next shot was on target off a free kick in the 63rd minute, but her flick towards the net was swallowed up by Solomon for her second save.
Â
The home side turned one of their chances into a goal in the 73rd minute when Dru Dorsey sent a ball across midfield that found Brooklyn Schomaker a few yards above the 18. Schomaker's shot just snuck under the crossbar to break the stalemate.
Â
That lead was immediately threatened when the Utes earned three straight corner kicks in the minutes after Schomaker's goal, but the Bearcats prevented those chances from turning into an equalizer. The Utes earned another corner in the 85th minute and Sophie Bellini nearly curved the ball into the net, but Cincinnati's Amber Brandon made the save. Bellini had another chance in the 88th minute when a free kick by Solomon arrived at Bellini's feet inside the box, but her attempt was blocked and that would prove to be Utah's final scoring opportunity of the evening.
Â
The advantage in total shots belonged to the Utes, the ninth time in 13 matches Nakada's club has posted an advantage in that category. In addition to their 9-6 edge in overall tries, Utah put five of those efforts on target, compared to only four for the Bearcats. Bellini and Kennedy Fletcher were both credited with two shots.

"All credit to Cincinnati today," said coach Hideki Nakada. "They were tough, won the majority of the individual duels, and ultimately, that led to the only goal of the game. Obviously, the playing surface was different and presented some challenges, but at the end of the day, we needed to be clearer on the ball, stronger in our duels, and sharper in key moments to get a result today."
The Utes got off the first shot of the game, but a right-footed effort from Jastel David 82 seconds in sailed just wide. A few minutes later, a Cincinnati cross found Tiana Campbell in front of the net, but Campbell's deflection was blocked by a lunging Anna Solomon for the Utah goalkeeper's first save of the night.Â
