Utes’ final match of 2026 set for Thursday at Ute Field
Â
Utah is now 4-9-5 in 2026 and 1-6-3 in conference. BYU stands at 11-3-3 and 7-1-2.
"I don't think the scoreline truly reflects how the game was played tonight," said coach Hideki Nakada. "As the stats show, I thought it was a very even game, and there were long stretches where I felt we controlled the run of play. BYU was able to capitalize on their chances, while unfortunately we weren't able to put away ours, and ultimately that was the difference in the game."Â
It took the home side just over a minute to get on the board on a goal by Mika Krommenhoek. The Utes did their best to put together an answer, but they were ruled offside on a pair of early attacks and a well-placed Julia Oka cross into the box in the 27th minute just missed finding a teammate.Â
Utah ramped up the pressure in the final minutes of the first half, with a 39th minute through ball by Shannon Davidson sending Oka in on goal, but Oka's shot was saved. The same could be said for an on-target effort by Tatym Dever moments later off a Utah corner and those two stops kept the score frozen into the half.
Â
The second period started with Utah again applying pressure in an attempt to draw level. The visitors quickly earned a corner and another Utah chance two minutes later led to a Davidson shot from the top of the box that was blocked. In the 58th minute, BYU turned a corner kick of their own into a second goal and a 2-0 lead. The home side boosted their lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute.
Â
The Utes cut into their deficit in the 76th minute, when Reese Kennel outfoxed a pair of defenders to find open space down the left side of the attacking area. Kennel's cross into the box found Pickelle at the far post and the Utah junior negotiated the ball past a pair of blue shirts for her first tally as a Ute. It also went down as Kennel's first assist of the year. Despite Utah's best efforts, however, that ended up being their only score of the evening.
The final numbers saw Utah own the edge in total shots with, while BYU possessed a narrow, 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Pickelle's three shots were team-high, whlie Oka, Dever and Sophie Bellini both logged two. In goal, Anna Solomon made three saves.
"I'm gutted for our team not to get the result that I felt their performance deserved," said Nakada, "but I'm incredibly proud of the effort, commitment, and fight they showed tonight. We'll now look forward to celebrating our wonderful seniors next week, and we'll do everything we can to put on a great performance and send them out in the right way."
Next UpUtah's 2026 finale will take place on Thursday, when they host Kansas State on Senior Day at Ute Field at 7 p.m.
