SALT LAKE CITY –
Hailey Maestretti threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout and the University of Utah softball team knocked off the No. 1 Texas Tech Red Raiders 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
This is the program's first win over the nation's No. 1 ranked team since 2017, when they recorded two victories over No. 1 Arizona. Maestretti is also the first pitcher to throw a seven-inning complete game shutout against TTU in 2026. The Red Raiders were blanked by Arizona on March 13, but in a five-inning affair.
This triumph boosts Utah's record to 27-14-1 in 2026 with a 5-8-1 conference mark.
"The resiliency this team showed today was incredible," said coach
Amy Hogue. "It was an absolute team win. Everyone came together to make this happen."
Facing the team with the Big 12's highest batting average and slugging percentage, Maestretti ran into some early trouble when the visitors loaded the bases in the first inning, but she extricated herself from the jam, then allowed just a two-out single in a scoreless second and induced a double play ball to end the third.
In the bottom of the third, the Utes created some run support for their starter. An error to begin the frame put
Hailee White on second and when a long fly ball to center became another error three batters later, White touched home with the game's first run.
Cian Noli then took full advantage of the extra outs by blasting a two-run homer to center.
In the fourth inning, a
Shonty Passi lead-off single started another rally. Passi moved to second on a groundout, then scored on another Texas Tech miscue to make the score 4-0. After that, it was all about Maestretti.
The sophomore southpaw stranded two more runners in the fifth and worked around a lead-off double and a two-out walk in the sixth. After allowing a lead-off safety in the final frame, she got Mia Williams to pop out and Jackie Lis to bounce into a game-ending double play.
