SALT LAKE CITY – Starting pitcher
Shelbee Jones started her day with five innings of one-run ball, but the No. 1 Texas Tech Red Raiders added to their lead in the late innings and defeated the University of Utah softball team 7-1 on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
The Utes are now 27-15-1 overall in 2026 and 5-9-1 in the Big 12.
Jones and Texas Tech's Nijaree Canady dueled for the first five innings, with the only blemish on either pitcher's line being a Taylor Pannell homer for the visitors in the second. That was the only hit Jones allowed until the sixth and she also had a stretch in which she retired six of seven batters in the fourth and fifth frames.
In the sixth, the Red Raiders used a pair of homers to increase their lead to 4-0, but the Utes found a way to get on the board in the bottom of the frame.
Kennedy Proctor led off with a double and moved to third on an error.
Cian Noli followed by lining an RBI single into left that pulled the Utes within three.
Unfortunately for the home side, they couldn't climb any closer. Texas Tech scored three more in the seventh and then kept Utah from scoring in the bottom of the inning.
