SAN JOSE, Calif. – Four different players finished with multiple hits, including
Danika Wilson, who logged three RBIs, a run scored, a triple and a stolen base as the University of Utah softball team erased an early deficit to capture an 8-4 win over the UCSB Gauchos on Sunday at the Spartan Softball Complex in San Jose, Calif.
Utah has captured six of their last seven games and are 8-2 in 2026.
The Gauchos were the first team out of the gate, putting up a run in the second and using five singles in the third to improve their edge to 3-0.
That deficit was still intact at the start of the sixth, but that's when Utah's offense sprung to life and took control of the game. A walk and a single started the rally and
Payton Crank got the Utes on the board by punching an RBI single into left. A one-out error plated
Kate Blunt to make it a one-run game, but the biggest blow came from Wilson two batters later. The freshman center fielder blasted 2-1 pitch off the right field wall for a two-run triple that thrust the Utes into the lead. After a walk, another UCSB error allowed the fifth run of the frame to score for a two-run Utah advantage.
The Gauchos tried to stage a comeback of their own, climbing to within 5-4 in their half of the sixth, but the Utes squelched those hopes with another uprising in the seventh. A single and a double put runners on second and third before another error tallied
Mia Gomez to make the score 6-4.
Izzy Cruz and Wilson added RBI safeties to up the difference four runs and
Shelbee Jones, who pitched the final three stanzas, then retired the side in order in the bottom half to lock up her third win.

Utah's next stop will be Cathedral City, Calif., the site of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. For the Utes, the event will start with a Thursday matchup against Bethune Cookman.
