OREM, Utah –
Mariah Lopez and
Sydney Sandez combined on a four-hit shutout and the No. 16 University of Utah softball team put on a 14-hit laser show on their way to 9-0 trouncing of the Utah Valley Wolverines on Tuesday evening at the Wolverine softball field.
This final non-conference matchup of the season puts Utah's record at 31-10, while UVU falls to 17-25.
"I asked the team for a shutout, and I got it!" said head coach
Amy Hogue. "I'm proud of the work Mariah and Syd did tonight. Our offense was slow to start but finished very, very strong.
"Denning's bunt and stolen base was a great way to get things started. Scoring in the first inning is especially important in the midweek games. [Jimenez] and Belarde were excellent at the plate today and we had several that came off the bench and helped with our late-inning push.
Hailee White has been sneaky good for us. She does so many things well and is helping us win games in so many ways."
The Utes immediately put pressure on the Wolverines, as
Haley Denning beat out a bunt hit, stole second and scored on an
Aliya Belarde single before UVU could get an out in the first inning. Belarde made the score 2-0 later in the frame when she motored home from first on a single by
Julia Jimenez.
That lead was entrusted to Lopez, who stranded runners in scoring position in the first two innings, striking out the side in the second, then permitted only one single over her final three frames. She ended her night by inducing a ground ball for a double play to finish the fifth, concluding a night in which she allowed only three hits, struck out six and would haul in her 14th victory.
Utah's offense blew the game open in the sixth and seventh, piling up six runs on eight hits, and they did all their damage in the former frame with two outs.
Abby Dayton started the outburst with an RBI triple and a
Hailee White single plated Dayton to make the score 5-0. A pinch-hit double off the bat of
Elicia Espinosa sent White across and Espinosa tallied the final run of the sixth when she touched home on a wild pitch.
The seventh inning began with a knock by Belarde and two batters later, Jimenez put the finishing touches on a 4-for-4 performance by rocketing an RBI double into right-center. She capped the scoring by crossing the plate on a wild pitch later in the stanza. Sandez, who allowed only one baserunner in two innings of relief, brought the contest to an end with a perfect bottom of the seventh.
