SALT LAKE CITY –
Mariah Lopez gave up only six hits and struck out eight while throwing her eighth complete game of the year, but the No. 16 University of Utah softball team was handed a 3-0 defeat by the No. 2 UCLA Bruins in Pac-12 Conference action on Friday evening at the Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
Utah's 2023 record now stands at 31-11 with a 12-7 conference record.
"We did some really great things out there today," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "Mariah struck out eight and we hit the ball well but nothing seemed to fall for us. Tomorrow, we need to find a way to string some hits together and put some runs up. Hopefully we can have a little bit of luck as well so some balls will find some holes."
Both Lopez and UCLA's Megan Faraimo started strong, as Faraimo held the Utes hitless through the first two frames and Lopez earned five strikeouts in the opening two innings, striking out the side in the second. The Bruins broke through in the third on a two-run homer by Maya Brady to grab the lead.
The Utes had a chance to answer in their half of the third, putting two runners on with two outs, but Faraimo induced a fly ball to center to end the rally. Utah found itself in an identical situation in the fifth, but UCLA's starter again worked out of the jam.
In the sixth, the visitors used a single and a double to tally their third run and Faraimo made the lead stand up by retiring six of the last seven hitters she faced.
