STANFORD, Calif. - Utah Softball dropped its series finale at No. 25 Stanford this afternoon, 6-2.
Â
Ellessa Bonstrom homered and scored both runs while
Alyssa Barrera capped her weekend with another multi-hit performance. Those two, along with
Hailey Hilburn and
Julia Noskin, combined for 13 of Utah's 15 hits this weekend (.351 average). Other than that, it was a difficult weekend at the plate for the Utes, who hit just .197 as a team, striking out 17 times and going 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
Â
The Cardinal used one big inning, the second, to earn the win. In fact, the second inning has been the worst for the Utes this season as they have been out-scored 60-12. Today, Emily Young doubled and Emily Schultz took a four-pitch walk to start the frame. After a wild pitch advanced both runners a Utah error allowed them to score for a 2-0 lead.
Â
After another walk, Utah was able to nab a base-runner at the plate but Kristina Inouye smacked a two-run single to double the advantage. After another single, Whitney Burks drove in two more for a 6-0 score.
Â
Bonstrom and Barrera singled to open the fourth and after both advanced on a wild pitch, Utah scored its first run on a
Makayla Hurst sac fly. Bonstrom would belt her fifth homer of the season, a solo whack, to begin the sixth. After the rough start in the circle,
Sydney Sandez entered in relief and quietly threw four shutout innings for the Utes.
