EUGENE, Ore. – It was another late goal that sunk Utah Soccer in its Pac-12 opener on Friday evening as Oregon scored in the 87
th minute to win 1-0.
A stumble off a throw-in and a blocked clearance allowed Zoe Hasenauer a free run down the right side and her cross was pinpoint, finding the head of Marissa Everett for her sixth goal of the season and winner.
In four of Utah's five losses this season, the deciding goal came in the final five minutes.
"I am proud of the team's effort," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We played aggressively and executed the game plan well. Unfortunately, we came up a little short at the end. I am encouraged by the effort and we cannot wait for two more games next week."
The Utes withstood an early swam of Oregon chances with the Ducks racking up three corners in the first 15 minutes and
Carly Nelson making a big save to deny Hasenaur.
Utah settled in and was the better side the rest of the period.
Hailey Skolmoski forced a save in the 23
rd minute before
Paola van der Veen fired high. In the final minute of the half, Halla Hinriksdottir held
Aleea Gwerder's try from a corner.
Utah continued to press the matter in the second half as Hinriksdottir denied Skolmoski and
Jessica Hixson. Van der Veen created a pair of chance but one was blocked and the other sailed to the Duck keeper.
At the other end, Nelson was quick to react to a corner and stopped Oregon's first chance of the half. She held on to Emma Eddy's effort in the 77
th minute and would later take a knock when she came to claim another corner.
Utah's final chances sandwiched the deciding goal. Moments before Oregon scored, Van der Veen missed wide and Gwerder sailed one high in the waning seconds.
Oregon had more shots than Utah but the Utes put more on frame, creating five chance to three for the Ducks.
