TUCSON, Ariz. - Utah Soccer suffered another heartbreaking defeat this evening with a 2-1 double-overtime setback at Arizona
Ireland Dunn broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half, firing into the roof of the net from in close to give Utah a 1-0 lead. Paola van der
Veen was credited with the assist to give her a team-high 10 points.
Despite taking the momentum, Utah relented it two minutes later. From a corner, a Ute attempted a headed clearance but Jill Aguilera volleyed it home for a 1-1 score.
Aguilera was the hero of the evening for UA in the second overtime. A foul and yellow card allowed Utah a free kick that it played long down the field. Unfortunately, it traveled out of bounds. From there, Arizona gained possession and Aguilera scooped up the ball in midfield, took four dribbles with her left foot toward goal and unleashed a powerful shot into the upper right corner for the winner in the
108th minute.
"I am proud of the team," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We gave a fantastic effort tonight. We defended with grit, created some good chances and played together as a team in a tough environment. We are improving in some important areas. As close as we have been to getting some big results, I believe these experiences will pay off here soon."
Utah had the first two shots of the game within the opening 10 minutes as Jessica
Hixson fired high and Holly
Daugirda went wide. It also managed the first shots on goal as Dunn and Hailey
Stodden forced saves from
Lainey Burdett. After
Carly Nelson was called into action to deny
Jada Talley, Utah's final chance of the half fell to Van der
Veen, but a UA defender blocked her attempt.
The second half started with Nelson stepping up to stop
Kelcey Cavarra right from the kick-off. Meanwhile, the Utes only mustered one good look after Dunn's goal as
Tavia Leachman went wide from her center-back position. Nelson continued to keep her side in the match with saves on Aguilera and Talley in the final 20 minutes of regulation.
After an uneventful first overtime period, Nelson denied Aguilera to begin the second stanza. Utah had a golden chance to end the game in the
105th minute when Van der
Veen had another attempt blocked. This time the ball fell to
Makayla Christensen, but her point-blank header was palmed away by
Burdett.
