SAN DIEGO - It took 10 innings but the University of Utah softball team (20-15-1 overall, 1-3 Mountain West) edged San Diego State, 1-0, to wrap up the first weekend of conference play.
A pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Hailey Davenport with two outs in the 10th inning. Davenport patiently battled to a full count before drawing the bases-loaded walk, and plating the game-winning RBI.
Ute hurler Meghan Dyer, who tossed all 10 innings, got the Aztecs to retire in order in the bottom of the 10th.
Dyer fanned nine Aztec batters, allowing only four hits and one walk.
The visitors finished with eight hits today as Diana Phillips led the Utes at the plate, going 3-for-5. Andrea Hoffman was the only other Ute with multiple hits. She was 2-for-4 and that included a single in the 10th that eventually led to her scoring the game-winning run.
The Aztecs, who fall 24-15 overall and to 1-3 in league action, only had four hits. All four hits came from four different batters. Christina Ross came on in relief after the seventh and is saddled with the hard-luck loss. She falls to 16-8 on the year.
The Utes will host their home opener next Friday and Saturday when in-state rival Brigham Young visits Ute Field for a pair of single league games
