SALT LAKE CITY - Four Brigham Young home runs accounted for five of its runs as the University of Utah softball team (20-16-1 overall, 1-4 Mountain West) saw the Cougars steal a 6-0 win here in Utah's home opener this afternoon.
"Our players didn't make the necessary adjustments that we needed to make at the plate this afternoon," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "Our players know how to adjust at the plate but they just weren't making them.
"The key (to pitching) is to hit all of your sports. When you face a good hitting team, it's important to hit every sport. If you don't hit them against a team like BYU, then they will definitely take advantage of it.
"When you're not crisp on the field, it's tough. And, we weren't crisp on the field today."
BYU (22-16, 3-2) saw two of its homers come from the bat of Jodi Norton. She launched a solo shot to center field in the fourth and a two-run homer to center field in the seventh.
Meghan Dyer (14-10 overall) got the start in the circle and went the distance for the Utes. She fanned 12 batters but allowed nine BYU hits and six runs (five earned).
Utah managed three hits off of BYU hurler Christie Zinanti (8-6). All three Ute hits came from different batters.
Andrea Ramirez and Angeline Quiocho also homered for the visitors this afternoon.
The same two teams will go at it again at Ute Field on Saturday afternoon. First pitch of the second game of the series is set for 1 p.m.
