Long Ball Spells Doom for Softball

SALT LAKE CITY - A first-pitch home run by Brigham Young's Cortney Clark set the tone for the rest of the game as the Cougars raced away with an 11-2 league win over the University of Utah softball team (20-17-1 overall, 1-5 Mountain West) here this afternoon.
Clark got the game started with a first-pitch dinger. Ute hurler Meghan Dyer then got Jenifer Whiteley to strikeout but then surrendered what would be the first of two home runs to Jodi Norton. BYU held a 2-0 lead after one inning and plated runs in all but the third and fourth innings.
In all, BYU (23-16, 4-2 MWC) tagged Utah for 12 hits. Dyer got the start in the circle and tumbles to 14-11 on the year. She went five innings and allowed seven hits and five runs. Dyer didn't walk a single Cougar batter while fanning five. Haili Squire came on in relief to pitch the last two innings. She allowed five hits and six runs. Only two of them were earned.
The Utes scattered eight offerings from BYU pitcher Christina Gwyn. Diana Phillips and Hailey Davenport both had 2-for-4 efforts at the plate today. Among Davenport's two hits was her 12th homer of the year. It was a solo shot in the fifth frame.
Gwyn got the win for the Cougars, upping her pitching record to 11-8. Clark led the BYU offense with a 3-for-5 outing. She also had five RBI and two runs.
Utah returns to action next week when it hosts New Mexico in a doubleheader and Colorado State in a pair of single games.
