FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team (17-10-1 overall) couldn't overcome a slow start against the Ohio State Buckeyes here this afternoon as a scant 1-0 lead held for a Buckeye victory.
With the win, the Big Ten rival improves 16-12 on the year.
"We came out and we played hard today, but, once again, we didn't string the hits together," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We got four hits but none of them were timely.
"I think we played hard against Ohio State, Meghan Dyer pitched well for us. But, we needed a key base hit and we didn't have that.
"We had a great spring trip. I thought we played hard, we did some good things and I think the team learned some good lessons. We're excited to start the second half of the season with the tournament in Reno and with the beginning of Mountain West Conference play."
The Utes, who were held hitless for the first three innings, finished with four hits on the afternoon. Diana Phillips had the top offensive outing for the Utes, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Kelly Matthews and Staci Hemingway had the team's other two hits.
Meghan Dyer got the start in the circle and takes the loss, falling to 12-6 for the year. She fanned eight, walked four and allowed six hits on the day.
The lone Buckeye run came from a bases loaded miscue. With the bases juiced, a passed ball allowed Megan Schwab to score from third.
Utah had a runner on third in both the fourth and sixth innings. Hemingway's single in the fourth moved Phillips from first to third with two outs. But, Utah couldn't convert as Kristie Keller struck out to end the inning.
The sixth inning saw Utah put runners on second and third with one out. But, OSU pitcher Jamee Juarez got Andrea Hoffman and Hemingway to fly out and strike out, respectively.
OSU finished with six hits on the day, all from six different bats. Juarez got the win in the circle. Her eight-K, four-hit, no-walk effort improved her record to 5-7 on the year.
Utah returns to action next weekend when it plays in the Nevada Tournament in Reno, Nev. The tournament also features Nevada and St. Mary's College.
