RENO, Nev. - A solo home run by freshman Kara Foster wasn't enough as the University of Utah softball team (17-11-1 overall) saw its rally fall short in a 6-1 loss here to the University of Nevada this afternoon.
The win improves the Wolfpack to 11-24 on the year while the loss is the fourth straight for the visiting Utes. "We did not come prepared to play today on either side of the ball," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We were unable to make adjustments at the plate and we didn't play well defensively. We kicked the ball around and threw it all over the place. The good news is we have another opportunity to win two so we'll put our energy towards that."
Utah hurler Karina Cannon got the start in the circle and got knocked around, surrendering 10 hits and five runs (three earned) in six innings of work. Meghan Dyer came on in relief to pitch the final inning.
The Utes could only manage four hits off of Wolfpack pitcher Katie Holverson, who managed to control Utah's usually potent offense. Kara Foster was the lone Ute to bag multiple hits on the day. She was 2-for-3 with a solo home run, accounting for the team's lone run in the fourth inning.
Nevada got on the board, in the third inning, when Kristin Stith plated the game's first run. She had the bases loaded with no outs and hit into a fielder's choice situation, scoring Kelsey Starr. Starr had a leadoff double to start the inning.
Foster's homer tied it at 1-1 after four innings. But, Nevada scored five runs in the final three innings to run away with the victory.
It was a three-run fifth that allowed the Wolfpack to pull away from the Utes, and it all came from one swing of the bat. Brittany Puzey hit the three-run shot in the fifth, extending Nevada's lead to 4-1. A run in each the sixth and seventh innings allowed the Wolfpack to finish with the five-run win.
Holverson went the distance and got the win. She ups her season tally to 5-11. Holverson fanned nine Ute batters, scattering only four hits on the day. The team finished with 11 hits. It was paced by Michelle Beach's 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
Utah remains in Reno, Nev., to play Saint Mary's at 10:30 a.m. (PDT) tomorrow.
