SAN DIEGO - The University of Utah softball team (34-19, 10-8 Mountain West) completed the regular season today with a pair of road losses to San Diego State, 8-3 and 5-4.

While Utah couldn't improve upon its third-place finish today, the two Aztec (30-11, 15-3) wins assured them the regular season conference crown. They will be the No. 1 seed in the MWC tournament while Brigham Young settles for the No. 2 seed. Utah is the tourney's third seed.

Diana Phillips and Jackie Wong each extended their hitting streaks this afternoon. Phillips is now tied for the longest hitting streak in the league this season, chalking up a hit in her 21st straight game. Wong raced her streak out to 20 games.

SDSU scored in all but one inning of game one, hanging a pair of runs on the board in each the first, fourth and sixth innings. The home team scattered three RBI singles over the course of the game. But, the big hits were RBI doubles by Erin Floros in the first and Monica Alnes in the sixth. SDSU also had a homer among its 10 hits, as Chrissie Markham hit a solo shot in the second.

Utah countered with a three-run fifth inning. With Meghan Crouse and Jackie Wong on board, Jessica Shiery belted her team-leading 12th homer of the year. It was a towering shot over the right-field fence.

The Utes had seven hits in the opening game. Wong, Phillips and Shiery each had two hits apiece. Shiery had three RBI and a run scored.

The rocky ways continued for Utah in game two as the Aztecs' Meagan Hartung led the game off with a solo shot.

Shiery's bases-loaded sac fly in the third tied it at 1-1 while Phillips' three-run homer in the fifth gave Utah its first lead of the game. The Utes led, 4-2, until the bottom of the sixth.

The home team rallied, plating three runs in regaining control of the game. It was a pair of RBI singles that did in the Utes. A bases-loaded single by Markham tied the game while Bree Boyer followed that with what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single.

Karina Cannon was the starter in the first game and took the loss. She tumbles to 17-7 for the year. Meghan Dyer got the nod in game two, falling to 13-8 this year.

Utah returns to action on Thursday, May 11, when it plays in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas. Utah will be the No. 3 seed in thr tourney in which the champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
