LAS VEGAS - Ivette Hernandez hit only her second home run of the year, but it was a big one as it helped the University of Utah softball team (36-19 overall) defeat its rival, Brigham Young, in the Mountain West Conference Tournament here this evening, 1-0.
Hernandez hit a solo shot over the left-field fence in the seventh inning to lift the No. 3-seeded Utes over the No. 2 seeded Cougars.
Utah returns to the diamond to play the winner of San Diego State and UNLV on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (PDT).
Meghan Dyer tossed three innings of no-hitter ball, not surrendering a hit until the leadoff hitter of the fourth belted one through the right side into right field. She allowed only two hits on day, fanning 12 batters and allowing only two walks. She is 14-8 on the year.
Summer Tobias takes the loss for the Cougars.
BYU threatened in the fifth, getting runners on second and third with two outs. But, Dyer rallied fanning Tracee Hoch and ending a would-be rally.
