TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Utah softball team may have out-hit No. 25-ranked North Carolina, but the Tar Heels scored four runs on their three hits in downing the Utes, 4-1, in the championship bracket of the Sunshine State Tournament.
The Utes (12-6 overall) banged out five hits on the afternoon but couldn't rally, seeing its winning streak halted at nine games.
UNC (19-5) got all it needed in the top of the second inning. After craftily placing runners on second and third with two outs, Marissa May made it 1-0 in scoring on a passed ball. Erin Dudley doubled their lead on an RBI single, scoring Anna Evans.
Karina Cannon got the nod in the circle and took the loss for the Utes. She went six innings and struck out eight UNC batters. She allowed three hits, three walks and four runs (only two of which were earned). Lindsie Nielsen came on in relief in the seventh.
The lone Ute run came in the third inning. Meghan Crouse led the inning off with a walk and moved to third on a throwing error after Jackie Wong lined out to second base. Crouse would score on a sacrifice fly by Diana Phillips.
North Carolina would counter with runs in each the fourth and sixth innings, putting the game out of reach for Utah.
Five different Utes tallied the team's hits on the day.
Norris got the win for the Tar Heels, improving to 7-1 on the year. She struck out six batters and walked four in allowing five hits and one earned run.
The Utes return to action next week when they venture to California for Spring Break. Utah will play Cal-Fullerton before heading into the prestigious Kia Classic on March 15-19.
