FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team (13-6 overall) edged Cal-State Fullerton in a pitcher's dual, snagging the 1-0 win this evening.
The Utes (13-6) scored the game's only run in the first inning and rode the defensive styles of hurlers Meghan Dyer and Karina Cannon in the victory.
Dyer got the start and went five innings. She surrendered one hit and allowed only one walk. Dyer fanned eight Fullerton batters in upping her mark to 7-1 on the year. Cannon came on in the sixth inning and picked up her first save of the season. She retired three batters and allowed only one walk.
The only bit of offense in the game came from the bat of freshman Jessica Shiery. She hit a two-out solo home run in the first inning.
The Utes tapped Titans pitcher Marissa Marzan (4-4) for three hits, coming from Shiery, Diana Phillips and Andrea Hoffman.
CSF's lone hit was a double in the second inning off the bat of Katie Gollhardt.
The Utes return to action on Wednesday, March 15, when they play Oklahoma in the Kia Classic. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
