TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Utah softball team broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning to edge Kent State, 3-2, in the first game of bracket play at the Sunshine State Tournament today.
With the win, the Utes (12-5 overall) advance in the tournament's championship bracket and will play North Carollina at 10 a.m. (MST).
Devina Quintero lifted the Utes to victory in the seventh inning when she hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Jackie Wong and giving Utah the one-run victory.
Wong led the Utes in going 4-for-4 at the plate against the Golden Flashes. For the day, she went 6-for-8, also hitting 2-for-4 in the 4-3, extra-innings win over Bradley earlier this afternoon. Quintero also shined at the plate. She was 2-for-4 against KSU, plating two runs and scoring another one herself.
Meghan Dyer gets the win for the Utes. She improves to 6-1 for the year. Dyer went all seven innings, struck out eight and walked only one in allowing seven hits.
The Utes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at bat. An RBI double by Quinero and an RBI single by Ivette Hernandez gave Utah a seemingly safe 2-0 lead after the first half-inning.
However, the Golden Flashes tied the game with runs in the second and third innings. KSU cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and solo home run in the third.
KSU's Brittney Robinson is tagged with the loss. She struck out 11 and didn't allow walk. However, she allowed 11 Utes hits in the loss.
