SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team earned its first Mountain West Conference victory of the season by taking game one from host San Diego State this afternoon, 5-0.
Utah (12-16, 1-2 MWC) scattered nine hits and took advantage of three SDSU errors as the Aztecs fall to 22-19 overall and 0-7 in conference tilts.
Brianna Gourdin picks up her second straight win as she ups to 8-7 for the year. She fanned two Aztec batters, walked one and allowed only three hits. SDSU's Cori Janelli takes the loss in allowing nine Ute hits and three earned runs. Janelli is 9-10 on the year.
Bryanne Durrence and Diana Phillips had a big day at the plate in the first game. Durrence was 2-for-4 but plated three of the team's five RBI. Phillips was 3-for-3 and scored two runs.
The Utes got all they needed in the third inning. Two RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk hung three on the board for the visitors. Durrence got it started with a bases-loaded single to third, scoring Phillips. Ivette Hernandez scored the insurance run when she crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk to Lynsey Wall. Sharee Fonoti capped it off with an RBI single to left, which scored Devina Quintero, and built the safe 3-0 lead.
Another two runs in sixth made it an insurmountable 5-0 lead in favor of Utah. A two-RBI single to left by Durrence plated Phillips and Jackie Wong and gave the Utes a five-run cushion.
The same two team tangle again in game two of the doubleheader down in San Diego. It is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. (PDT).
