LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah softball team dropped its second and third straight games in falling to UNLV in Mountain West Conference action today, 10-0 and 4-3.
The Utes stumble to 12-19 for the year and to 1-5 in conference games. UNLV, winners of three straight, improves to 29-14 and 6-2 in MWC play.
Ute hurlers Brianna Gourdin (8-8) and Lindsie Nielsen (4-10) each took a loss on the day. Gourdin allowed 11 hits in game one and seven earned runs. She did strike out four UNLV batters to go along with four walks. Nielsen got tapped for six hits and four runs in game two. Only two runs were earned as she fanned three opposing batters.
Devina Quintero led the visitors at the plate. She went 3-for-5 with all three RBI and a home run. Also bagging multiple-hits in the two-game series were Kelly Matthews (2-for-3), and Diana Phillips (2-for-7).
UNLV's Jacque Kerrigan (18-12) got the win in game one and also came on in relief in game two to pick up her fourth save this season. Shannon Crisp (10-1) got the game two victory.
Utah 0, UNLV 10
The Utes dropped their second straight game in a five-inning shutout to the Rebels. Utah tallied only three hits in the first game, one each for Phillips, Quintero and Kate Nygaard.
The Rebels belted out 11 hits, three of them extra base hits, and capitalized on five Ute errors in scoring seven earned. Brianna Gourdin took the loss in striking out four and walking four. She also allowed three doubles and one home run on the afternoon.
Brittany Meade's two-RBI single in the first got it rolling for UNLV, allowing the home team to build an early 2-0 lead. The Rebels stretched that lead to five with a three-run second and doubled their lead in the fourth to make it 10-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Becky McDonald capped the scoring by belting a two-run home run for the host team.
Utah managed to have runners in scoring position in each of the last three innings but didn't have enough in its rallies to bring them home.
Utah 3, UNLV 4
The Rebels struck first again in the night cap, putting four runs on the board in the third. Marissa Nichols and Morgan Bostwick each scored on a fielder's choice and a throwing error to make it 2-0 for UNLV. The lead doubled for UNLV on a two-run home run by Caitlyn Paus.
Utah rallied in the fourth and fifth innings, finally capitalizing in the fifth. The Utes managed to load the bases in the fourth but couldn't drive anyone home. However, Quintero stepped up to belt a three-run homer in the fifth with Phillips and Jackie Wong on board, cutting UNLV's lead down to one, 4-3.
The Utes had an excellent chance to tie it in the sixth. They managed to put runners on second and third with two outs. However, UNLV hurler Kerrigan got Wong to strikeout to end the inning. Utah went down 1-2-3 in the final inning on a pair of groundouts and a strikeout.
