SDSU Blanks Ute Softball in Nightcap, 1-0

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Both the University of Utah and San Diego State softball teams mustered just three hits in Saturday's nightcap of a doubleheader at SDSU Stadium. But it was the Aztecs who were able to squeak out a 1-0 victory over the Utes in the contest.
Utah's three hits were scattered over three different innings. Meanwhile, San Diego State managed two hits off Utah starter Lindsie Nielsen in the second and that was enough. SDSU's Allison Smith singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice and took third on a groundout to second base.
Lacey Craft then delivered a two-out double to center field, plating Smith with what would be the game's only run.
From that point, it was a pitchers' duel between Nielsen and Aztec starter Celena Velasquez. Both pitchers put up zeroes for the remainder of the contest. Nielsen (4-9) was the tough-luck loser, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out four. Velasquez (11-7) scattered three singles and struck out seven to pick up the win.
Utah did have a chance to tie it in the seventh inning. Diana Phillips led off with a single to right field. She moved to second on a sacrifice to get into scoring position. With two outs, Kate Nygaard ripped a line drive, but it was right at SDSU third baseman Taryin Casillas. Phillips was the only Utah batter to advance past first base against Velasquez.
The Utes are back in action again Sunday with a doubleheader at UNLV. First pitch in game one is slated for Noon PDT.
