Softball Cruises Past McNeese State, 6-1

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Utah softball team returned to the win column with a 6-1 win over McNeese State in day two action here at the Texas A&M Invitational this afternoon. It was the first of two games as the Utes will play No. 11-ranked Texas A&M in doubleheader action.
Utah (8-10) capitalized on six Cowgirl errors and belted seven hits in chalking up the victory. MSU falls to 8-14 for the year.
Brianna Gourdin, who made her third straight appearance and her second straight start, got the win. She improves to 5-5 for the year. She struck out eight, walked three and scattered seven hit. Gourdin allowed one earned run.
Diana Phillips was the only Ute to bag two hits. She was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Five other Utes collected single hits against the Cowgirls.
The Utes scored in each the fourth and fifth innings. Utah got on the board when Kate Nygaard hit a sacrifice fly to center In the fourth. It scored Kelly Matthews who pinch ran for Ivette Hernandez. The second run came off of Diana Phillips' triple to right-center in the fifth. Meghan Crouse scored easily from second.
A two-run sixth and seventh innings gave Utah the insurance it needed to cruise to victory. In the sixth, Nygaard hit an RBI single to score Texie Criddle while Lynsey Wall executed a suicide-squeeze play to score Bryanne Durrence. Two unearned runs in the final stanza capped the scoring for Utah.
McNeese scored its only run in its final at bat as Cowgirl hurler Jessica Denham falls to 1-6 for the season.
