COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Utah dropped the second of two games when it fell to the No. 11-ranked Texas A&M Aggies, 9-1, here at the Texas A&M Invitational this afternoon.
The Aggies (19-2) belted 11 hits in racking up the five-inning win. The 4-5-6 batters for A&M scored seven runs and accounted for four RBI as Utah falls to 8-11 for the year.
Lindsie Nielsen takes the loss for Utah. She is 3-5 for the season. Nielsen surrendered 11 hits and walked two Aggie batters. Her rival, Aggie hurler Amanda Scarborough, tallies the win and is 10-0 this year.
The Utes tapped A&M for five hits. Lynsey Wall led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2. But, it was a Devina Quintero home run that led to Utah's only score. Quintero was 1-for-2 in this, the second game.
The game got off to a rocky start with a three-run second inning by the Aggies. The 4-5-6 batters in the A&M lineup broke the scoreless tie with a leadoff home run by Megan Gibson and added to it with a two-run home run by Adrian Gregory. The host school hung another four runs on the board in the third to up their lead, 7-1, and a two-run fifth made it 9-1. That enacted the run-rule that ends a game when one team has an eight-run lead after five.
The Utes used the long ball to tally their lone run. Devina Quintero led off the third with a homer to cut the lead to 3-1. The run broke the Aggies' 15-inning scoreless streak and A&M pitcher Amanda Scarborough `s 22-inning scoreless run.
