COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Utah softball team staged a two-out, seventh-inning comeback to top McNeese State, 2-1, in the opening game of the Texas A&M Invitational here this afternoon.
The Utes (7-9 overall) benefited from a throwing error with two outs and runners on second and third in their final at bat. The Cowgirls fall to 6-13 on the year.
Brianna Gourdin came on in relief in the fifth to pitch two and two-thirds and bags the win. She allowed only one hit and whiffed four McNeese State batters in upping her mark to 4-4. Lindsie Nielsen started and gave up three hits and one earned run while fanning three and walking four.

With pinch runners Meghan Crouse and Kelly Matthews on second and third, respectively, Sarah Lyman stepped in to pinch hit. A slow roller to the second baseman, she reached on a throwing error that allowed both Crouse and Matthews to cross the plate and lift the Utes to the win.
The Cowgirls drew the first blood in the fifth inning. Beth Jordan hit an RBI double to the wall in left field, allowing Tonya Edlund to cross the plate.
The Utes return to action tonight to play the No. 11-ranked Texas A&M Aggies in game two. First pitch is slated for 4:45 p.m (CST).
