SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah softball team improved to 11-21 on the year after defeating Utah Valley State College (15-10) on Tuesday afternoon. The Utes came from behind and survived a scare to grab the 8-5 victory. Utah will now host Southern Utah on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
The Wolverines looked good early, posting one-two-three innings in the first three innings of play. Meanwhile, they posted their first run of the game off a long ball by Shyanne Durrant in the second.
The Ute bats came alive in the fourth. With one away and two on, Melissa Stahnke ripped a single to left field to clear the bases. Stahnke would advance to third on the throw back into the infield. She would then go onto score off a single to right by Devina Quintero. It was then Quintero's turn to score, aided by a home run by Ivette Hernandez to give Utah a 5-1 advantage.
Brianna Gourdin, who started the game, was relieved in the top of the sixth by freshman Samantha Schroeder. In the bottom of the sixth, Utah posted three more runs. The first two runs looked like deja vu as Quintero singled and then scored on a homer by Hernandez. The final run came off another long ball, this time by Kate Nygaard.
Trailing 8-1, UVSC staged a rally. The Wolverines knocked a home run, and two two-run doubles to make it an 8-5 game. The runs would chase Schroeder from the circle, in favor of the starter Gourdin again. Gourdin would get the three outs and secure the win for Utah.
Hernandez was the leader at the plate with a double, two home runs and three RBI. Seven of the nine Ute starters connected for at least one hit in the game.
The victory was Gourdin's ninth of the season (9-3). She scattered five hits over six innings, while allowing one earned run.
