SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah softball team rolled by Southern Utah 8-3 on a cold, windy and rainy Friday afternoon at Ute Field. The Utes used eight runs, four of which came off a grand slam by Glennis Donnelly, to get the win and improve to 12-21 on the year. Southern Utah falls to 21-13 with the loss. Utah now travels south to face in-state rival Brigham Young tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in a conference doubleheader matchup.
Southern Utah put the first run on the board when Kimberly Tillery connected for a long ball over the left field fence. The Utes would answer in the latter of the inning with a duo of runs aided by three straight T-Bird walks.
With a 2-1 advantage, Utah would put five more on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, pinch runner Sarah Lyman would score on a wild pitch by Mandy Brown for the first run of the inning. The next four would come from a grand slam by Glennis Donnelly. It was Donnelly's second chance with the bases loaded--she had left three stranded in the second after flying out.
The Utes would add one more in the fifth after Jackie Wong drew her third walk of the game, second with the bases loaded, to score Bryanne Durrence. Donnelly would then have another chance with the bases loaded, but would pop out to second to end the inning.
Trailing 8-1, the Thunderbirds would score two in the top of the seventh off a home run by Jentry Johnson to make good for an 8-3 final.
Brianna Gourdin tossed the first two innings of play for Utah, allowing only the home run to Tillery. Heather Bowlin would throw the third and fourth innings. Bowlin (1-6), who picks up the victory, didn't allow a hit in her time in the circle. In the fifth, freshman Melissa Oakes would come on in relief. Oakes struckout all six batters she faced. Then, in the seventh it was freshman Samantha Schroeder's turn. Schroeder would give up the second T-Bird homer before closing out the inning to secure the win.
Donnelly led Utah with the four RBI, while Jackie Wong had two on the day. Durrence notched a perfect 3-of-3 day at the plate, while also scoring three runs.
