Utah Softball Drops Game Two Against New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--The Utes dropped game two of their doubleheader against New Mexico 7-6. The loss evens Utah's record at 4-4 in conference play, 14-23 overall, while the Lobos get their first league win (1-5 MWC, 27-23 overall). Utah now travels to Fort Collins, Colo., to face Colorado State in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
New Mexico jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings of play. Two of the runs came from a home run off starter Heather Bowlin. The senior was chased from the circle in the third, in favor of Melissa Oakes.
Utah cut the lead in half in the fourth, when Kate Nygaard ripped a two-run homer. But, the Lobos increased their lead in the latter of the inning with two runs of their own.
In the fifth, Texie Criddle led off the inning with a triple down the left field line. She would go on to score on a single by Lynsey Wall. Wall would be retired, but Glennis Donnelly would reach on a double and then move to third on a single by Melissa Stahnke. Donnelly would then score after Devina Quintero's grounder was misplayed by the Lobo third baseman.
Down 6-4 after five, Utah would tie it up on Nygaard's second two-run dinger of the day. The two teams would play two scoreless innings, before New Mexico would win in it the bottom of the ninth. After Oakes put runners on the corners, Utah elected to bring in game one starter Brianna Gourdin. Gourdin would then throw a wild pitch on her first pitch of of the game, that allowed the Lobo runner on third to score.
Oakes (0-7), who picks up the loss, tossed 6.1 innings allowing three runs. Bowlin gave up four runs (three earned) in two innings of work.
At the plate, Donnelly was 3-of-5 with a run scored. Nygaard had the two home runs and Stahnke added two hits.
