SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah softball team picked up a 4-3 upset victory over No. 22/23 Pacific on Friday afternoon at Ute field. The win moves Utah to 15-25 overall and drops the Tigers to 28-15.
Utah was outhit in the game 13-6, but two of its six hits were the difference in the ballgame. In the second with two runners on, Lynsey Wall smashed a homer over the left field fence to put Utah up 3-0.
"I really felt like I was seeing the ball well today," said Wall. "I just grabbed that pitch and drove it."
The Ute lead would slowly shrink as the Tigers scored two in the fifth and another in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Ute defense would hold strong through a Tiger threat. After Pacific loaded the bases with one out, Jackie Wong would scoop up an infield grounder and fire to home to prevent the runner from scoring. Reliever Melissa Oakes would then get the next batter to fly out to left and leave three Tigers stranded.
Then in the latter of the inning, Glennis Donnelly would make her first hit of the game a big one. Donnelly took the 2-1 pitch and drove it over the fence in center field to give Utah the 4-3 victory.
"I haven't been hitting as well lately as I was earlier in the season," noted Donnelly. "I'm just glad I got my first hit of the game at that time."
The win is Oakes' first of the season (1-8). The freshman scattered five hits over three innings, while striking out two. Jennifer Dacre is credited with the loss for Pacific. She falls to 12-9 on the year.
