Utah Softball Falls Short Against BYU 5-4

PROVO, Utah-The Utah softball team fell to BYU 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Gail Miller Field despite outhitting the Cougars 11-10. The loss drops Utah to 12-22 overall, 2-3 in league play, while BYU improves to 21-11 overall and 3-2 in league play.
The Cougars scored all five of their runs in the third inning, with a two-out rally. The first pair of runs came off a long ball by Lauren Watson. The final three runs would then come off another home run, this time by Paige Paramore.
Utah chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the fourth off a single by Bryanne Durrence. Utah would score three in the top of the fifth using a two-out rally. With runners on second and third, Melissa Stahnke ripped a single up the middle to make it a 3-5 game. Stahnke would then score on a double to the gap in left center by Quintero.
In the sixth, Utah's Bryanne Durrence singled and advanced over to third with one out. But, the next two Utes failed to bring in Durrence. Utah had another opportunity in the seventh. Glennis Donnelly led off the inning with a single to right. Donnelly would move to second on a sac bunt by Stahnke. With one out, Donnelly would then get picked off by the Cougars. Utah's next two batters would knock singles, but were unable to advance as the Utes fell short (4-5) of the tie.
Brianna Gourdin is credited with the loss for Utah to put her at 9-4 this year. Gourdin scattered 10 hits in the six innings she threw. She allowed the five runs off the two long balls, but also struck out five in the game.
Niki Andersen picks up the victory to improve to 12-4 on the year. Andersen allowed four runs off seven hits in four and two-third innings. Brooke Boyce, who came on in relief of Andersen, picks up her second save of the season.
Quintero led all batters with three hits. Bryanne Durrence and Donnelly added a pair of hits for Utah.
