Utah Softball Falls To No. 1 UCLA

FRESNO, Calif.--The Utah softball team fell to No. 1 UCLA, 7-2, at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic on Saturday. The loss drops Utah to 6-14 on the year, while UCLA increases its spotless record to 24-0. Utah will now face No. 15 Fresno State this afternoon.
The Utes connected for just one hit against the Bruins' Kiera Goerl, but found other ways to get on base. Goerl, one of the nation's best hurlers, struck out 11 Utes but also walked four and put another three on after hitting them in the box. All in all, Utah left six runners on base, while UCLA stranded seven.
UCLA tallied six hits in the first inning to help drive in five runs, one of which was unearned. Among the highlights of the inning were two two-run doubles. The outburst of offense chased Ute senior Heather Bowlin from the circle after an inning of play. Freshman Melissa Oakes would toss the next three innings, scattering six hits and allowing two runs.
Utah did help Oakes out by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. In the inning, Goerl put Utah's Lynsey Wall and Jackie Wong on base after hitting them. The next batter, Glennis Donnelly, would then drive in the two runners with a double to left field.
In the fourth inning, Head Coach Mona Stevens brought in Brianna Gourdin to pitch. The sophomore allowed just two hits over three innings, while holding the Bruins scoreless. Gourdin also struck out two batters.
The loss drops Bowlin to 0-6 on the year, while Goerl improves to 14-0.
