SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah softball team opened its home season with a 4-2 victory over in-state rival Utah State at Ute Field on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. The win puts Utah at 8-19 on the year, while the Aggies fall to 4-22.
Utah punched in its first run in the first inning after Lynsey Wall crossed the plate on an illegal pitch by the Aggies. Utah would add another run in the second when Devina Quintero ripped a double to right center and went on to score on a single to right by Kate Nygaard.
Utah State knocked in a run of its own using a single by Kelly Vlahos in the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Quintero would connect again--this time for a home run--to put Utah back up by two runs.
The Aggies and Utes would both score in the sixth. USU's Sara Fleming knocked a single to left to bring in the Aggie runner. Meanwhile, it was Quintero and Nygaard connecting for Utah again. Quintero ripped her second double of the game and was brought in by Nygaard's second single.
Brianna Gourdin picks up the victory for Utah. Gourdin improves to 6-3 on the year, while USU's Higley falls to 4-9. Gourdin allowed four hits in six innings with two strikeouts.
