Utah Softball Drops Game To Boston College 10-9

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.--The Utes pounded the ball, but also booted it as they fell to Boston College 10-9 at the Palm Springs Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Utah's line score read nine runs, nine hits and five errors. Boston College committed four errors of its own, but the errors were the difference in the game for Utah as the Eagles' pitchers yieled six earned runs to Utah's three earned runs.
Utah came out smoking in the first inning. After Boston College retired Utah's leadoff batter, Jackie Wong, Glennis Donnelly, Melissa Stahnke and Ivette Hernandez all knocked singles. Hernandez's single brought in two runners to give Utah a 2-0 lead. The next batter Devina Quintero ripped a double that scored Stahnke and put the Utes up 3-0. Then, Kate Nygaard continued the offense with a single of her own to score Hernandez. With one out, four runs scored and two runners on, BC's Brittany Thompson was chased from the circle in favor of Tekae Malandris. Malandris would give up a single to Bryanne Durrence which would score two more for Utah and make it a 6-0 margin.
But, the lead didn't last long as Boston College scored two in the latter of the inning and then added seven more in the bottom of the second to grab the lead at 9-6. The second inning was ugly for Utah as it committed five errors. All seven of the Eagles' runs in the second were unearned.
Utah chipped away at the lead by taking advantage of an Eagle error in the fifth to score a run. The Utes connected for two more in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 9-9. Another Eagle error led to the two runs for Utah.
In the bottom of the seventh Thompson came back into the lineup for the Eagles and knocked a single to leadoff the inning. She would go on to score after a sacrifice bunt and two singles to give BC the 10-9 victory.
Brianna Gourdin (4-1) is credited with the loss after giving up three runs, one of which was earned. Gourdin came on in relief of Melissa Oakes, who allowed seven runs, two of which were earned in 1.0 inning of work.
