Utah Softball Falls To Notre Dame 4-3

PALM SPRINGS, Colo.--The Utah softball team dropped to 5-5 overall as it fell to Notre Dame 4-3 at the Palm Springs Tournament on Friday. Freshman pitcher Melissa Oakes threw a strong game for Utah, allowing just one earned run. But the Ute defense struggled, allowing three unearned runs to score.
In the first inning, the Irish took a 2-0 lead after a single and Ute fielding error brought in two runners. Utah would cut the lead in half in the top of the second after a home run to right field by Ivette Hernandez.
Notre Dame posted runs in the fifth and sixth innings, both of which were unearned, to push the margin to 4-1. Utah had a chance in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases with just one out. But the Utes left them loaded as the next two batters popped out. Utah tried to rally in the top of the seventh. Designated hitter Brianna Gourdin led off the inning with a single up the middle. After the next two Utes were retired, lefty slapper Jackie Wong connected for her first career home run. But the Irish retired the next Utah batter to secure the 4-3 victory.
Oakes (0-3) had the better line of the two pitchers, but is credited with the loss. The hurler scattered five hits over 6.0 innings, while striking out four batters and allowing just one walk. Heather Booth gets the win after allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Booth struck out eight batters in the game.
